Scouring and Mordanting Silk

Silk is more difficult to scour than wool as instead of just soaking it in warm soapy water it instead needs to be boiled for 10 minutes in soapy water. This should then be taken off the heat and allowed to cool  before the silk is removed. The liquid left over should then be stored and dipping the silk back in this after it has been dyed helps it to regain its lustre.

Mordanting the silk follows the same process as with wool except that the silk should be simmered at a slightly lower heat.
